YEONGJONG ISLAND
Yeongjong Island is located
just offshore from Incheon, on the western coast of the Korean Peninsula, due
west of Seoul. South Korea's relatively new Incheon International Airport
is located on this island. Before Incheon Airport was put into operation,
the main airport was Gimpo International, on the western side of Seoul.
Gimpo Airport is smaller but still in use.
The western coastline of
Korea experiences some of the highest & lowest tides in the world.
The highway connecting Yeongjong Island with the mainland provides an excellent
view of spectacular macrotidal mud flats (see pics below - it was a rainy day).
Modern macrotidal mudflats
at low tide consisting of gray mud and red algae (in distance). At high
tide, this entire area is flooded by the sea (the Yellow Sea).
Tidal channel developed in
macrotidal mudflats at Yeongjong Island. (Excuse the light pole passing
by.) The tidal flats are composed of gray mud & topped by red algae.
