WAUKESHA QUARRY
The Waukesha Quarry is
famous for yielding the Waukesha Lagerstätte, a nice soft-bodied fossil deposit
in fine-grained argillaceous dolostones of the Brandon Bridge Formation
(Llandoverian, Lower Silurian). It is located on the western side of Rt.
164, just to the north of the city of Waukesha, Waukesha County, southeastern
Wisconsin, USA.
GPS of quarry: 43° 2.038' North, 88°
13.059' West.
The Waukesha Quarry contains
several Silurian carbonate units - mostly dolostones (Racine Dolomite, Waukesha
Dolomite, Brandon Bridge Formation, Burnt Bluff Group, Wilhelmi Formation).
Waukesha Fault (yellowish-gray rubbly zone
in left portion of photo), a high-angle normal fault exposed in a highwall of
the Waukesha Quarry. The rocks making up the highwall are Silurian
dolostones. The hanging wall to the left of the fault has dropped
downward. The footwall on the right side of the fault has moved
upward. The geologists in the lower right corner are examining the
Ordovician-Silurian unconformity in the footwall block.
The Ordovician-Silurian
boundary interval present in the lower right corner of the above photo can be
better seen here.
