EASTERN  SNAKE  RIVER  PLAIN

 

Idaho's Snake River Plain has several large basalt lava fields as well as some isolated volcanoes that rise conspicuously above the general surface of the plain.  Big Southern Butte (see pic below) is a ~300 ky volcanic dome consisting principally of rhyolite lavas.

The Twin Buttes are a closely-spaced pair of volcanic domes on the southern side of Rt. 20.
