Dendrocrinus  caduceus

 

This is a rare fossil - it’s the head of the cladid crinoid Dendrocrinus caduceus (Hall, 1866).  The arms have been detached, so what remains is called the cup.

 

Classification: Echinodermata, Crinoidea, Cladida, Dendrocrinidae

 

Stratigraphy: float from the upper Waynesville Formation, Richmondian Stage, upper Cincinnatian Series, upper Upper Ordovician

 

Locality: loose piece from “flats” of Caesar Creek Lake’s emergency spillway, southwestern side, ~2/3-of-the-way between Clarksville Road & Roaring Run, northeastern Warren County, southwestern Ohio, USA.

Height of preserved cup = ~9.5 mm

Diameter of cup base = ~2 mm

Diameter of top of preserved cup = ~7 mm to ~9 mm (slightly compressed)
