BUCKHORN MINE GOLD ORE
Gold
& limonite (brownish) from southern Colorado’s Buckhorn Mine, one of
several old gold mines in the Crystal Hill Mining District. The area is in the mountains on the western
flank of the Rio Grande Rift Zone. The Buckhorn Mine principally produced
gold and silver, plus small amounts of a few other metals. Mineralization
is associated with Tertiary-aged igneous intrusions and rift-related faults
that cut through Precambrian gneisses.
